A demolition date has been set for the Westbank Lions Manor Retirement Home. The home was built just six years ago at a cost of $6.5 million but it has been deemed unsalvageable. The first residents had barely moved into the building when the cracks started to appear. It got progressively worse and residents were forced to move out three years ago for safety’s sake. The ground below the building is unstable.

The assisted living complex is jointly owned by B.C. Housing and the Westbank Lions Club. The two organizations had hoped the ground could be stabilized and the building repaired but that won’t happen.

The demolition meanwhile is set to begin by the end of February but since no one is allowed to enter the condemned building various brand new appliances like fridges, stoves can’t be removed. There are civil suits pending.
