Okanagan Residents Still Use More Water than Others

Tuesday, March 8, 2011 - 12:28 PM

How much water do you use?  Research indicates that there is less water available per person in the Okanagan than anywhere else in Canada.  Okanagan WaterWise, an education and outreach program of the Okanagan Basin Water Board, says studies show that the average Okanagan resident uses 675 litres of water per day, while the average Canadian uses 329.

You can make a positive impact on our environment by modifying how water is used.

For most of us, we have the most control over how we use water at home or in our yard.

We can all contribute by cutting that long shower short by an extra minute or two. One of the greatest areas we can curb our water use is in the yard though. 24% of Okanagan water use is a result of water used on lawns and gardens. There are several ways you can dramatically reduce outdoor water use including:

Water your lawn and garden between 10pm and 6am.

Wash your vehicle on your lawn or at a water safe car wash that purifies and repurposes the water it uses.

Xeriscape your yard. (helpful link: http://www.okanaganxeriscape.org/database.htm )

Cover your swimming pool when not using it.
