NewsMexican cave to be constructed inside the Kelowna Art Gallery
New installation by artist Kristoff Steinruck to be unveiled at Kelowna Art Gallery this summer Kristoff Steinruck: Crystal Cave 1 On view from August 4 to September 16, 2012 May 10, 2012 – Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition by Kristoff Steinruck, to be installed later this summer. In Kristoff Steinruck: Crystal Cave 1, the artist has created his own version of an unusual underground cave in Naica, Mexico. For the artist, the weirdness of the actual cave calls into question our normal definitions of notions such as time, reality, science, and perception. Kristoff Steinruck: CrystalCave 1 will be on view from August 4 to September 16, 2012 at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Kristoff Steinruck: Crystal Cave 1 is a piece that must be seen in real life to be truly experienced, as the other-worldly feeling of the cave is amazingly recreated by the artist’s precise construction methods using just everyday materials. The artist has constructed the piece by using brown paper for the cave’s walls, with cut and glued polystyrene forms standing in as the huge selenite crystals that have naturally formed in the real cave. To view the installation, visitors will peer through a hole that will have been punched into a temporary drywall barrier. Steinruck grew up in the Kootenays and studied at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, then received his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Guelph in Ontario in 2009. In the 2010-11 year he taught studio courses in Kelowna at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012, from 7 to 9 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Opening remarks will be at 7:15 pm, sharp. This will be a free event, open to members and guests, by invitation. The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in downtown Kelowna.
